An increasingly popular and important airport serving a vast area of Northern England and Southern Scotland. Traffic at the airport is made up of a mixture of private, charter and scheduled flights. Low cost “No Frills” airlines now increasingly use the airport and passenger numbers have increased dramatically and are now close to 3 million per year serving 70 destinations. The airport started life in 1935 with a small grass runway and a few ancillary buildings. The first scheduled service was from London (Croydon) to Perth in Scotland.
