Basingstoke Travel Guide
Commercially the town has a strong light industry base with a strong focus on electronics. Basingstoke has excellent transport links, particularly to London and the south coast. Much of the hastily built town centre of the 1960’s has recently been replaced by a more open and less oppressive environment, at the heart of this new development is Festival Place with 165 shops, 18 restaurants, bars and cafes, a 10 screen cinema and Sports Centre. The Anvil is Basingstoke’s premier arts venue with a permanently busy and varied arts and cultural agenda. The town’s Haymarket Theatre has an
interesting past starting life as a corn market in 1864, becoming a cinema in the early part of the last century before becoming a fully-fledged theatre in the 1940’s. The town has a few nightclubs and some decent pubs along with some interesting restaurants and bistro’s.
