British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands Travel Guide

With the exception of the low lying coral and limestone Anegada all the islands are of volcanic origin, the highest point being Sage Mountain on Tortola at 1800ft. Most of the islands’ hills are covered in dense sub tropical forest with the rest of the land either arid tracts scattered with palms or coastal mangrove swamps. The forests are made up of indigenous mahogany, bulletwood and fig trees alongside ferns and elephant’s ear whilst coconut and papaya trees are common throughout the islands. Wildlife includes lizards and rats with the remarkably noisy bo-peep frog unique to Tortola and virgin Gorda. The weather is balmy all year with low humidity and temperatures of between 22C and 27C. There is little rainfall but hurricanes are not unexpected from June to October.
