Mongolia Travel Guide

In between the mountains lie bleak deserts that have virtually no rainfall. The 1080sq mile Knovsgol Nuur is the largest lake of the countries many lakes containing 2% of the world’s available fresh water and situated amongst the country’s very best scenery. The Gobi Desert accounts for most of the southern third of Mongolia, its limited vegetation enough to support grazing farm animals. Much of the country is simple grassland, which serves as home to tahki horses (made famous by Genghis Khan). Mongolia may well enjoy 260 sunny days each year but winter temperatures are lethal dropping to -30C. It can snow in the Gobi as late as April and there is a short rainy season from mid July to September.
