Suva

Suva Travel Guide

Located on Viti Levu , Fiji's largest island is the country's capital, largest city and main port, Suva. Nearly half of Fiji's urban population resides in the capital. With its peninsular location, Laucala Bay to the east and the Suva Harbour to the west, Suva is quite the picturesque city. Also, housing a university, parliament buildings and cultural centres, Suva is also arguably the most sophisticated city in the South Pacific.

The town layout and the drivers are nothing short of mad so I would suggest the city is best explored on foot. Many walking tours are available with or without a guide. Discover the city's history, illustrated through the colonial buildings still standing tall and proud. For a look at some indigenous Fijian culture check out the Fiji Museum or the Indian cultural centre, or just roam about - you will soon learn that Central Suva is where all the action is. Just a suggestion: Start your day early in the morning, the afternoon heat can be killer.

Suva Municipal Market is a must see, the range of exotic fruits and vegetables is out of this world. There is also a floor where tobacco and kava is sold in mass quantities. It is here you will likely be persuaded into trying a cup of the local delicacy. Kava is a slightly narcotic root so if you do indulge, don't be surprised if you feel slightly out of it. The market is the ideal place to catch a glimpse of the Fijian culture, the unique mix of Asian, French Polynesian and Malenesian that makes Fiji so appealing. Plenty of colourful Asian sweets, local produce and the odd handicraft can be found on the stalls. The market will take you to a different world - pure exotica at your fingertips.

Cummings Street, made famous in the 1920s as the hot spot for saloons known as 'yaqona' and other dens of iniquity, is a great place to head after the sun goes down. Especially popular with Suva's large student population, Victoria Pde is also swarming with vibrant nightlife. The Fiji Times has an entertainment section outlining various live music events, cinema showings and traditional folk shows. If you're a night hawk get your fix in Suva, once you move onto the outer islands, life is slower and much quieter.

To get away from the hustle and bustle, head for the hills. Just north of Suva lies the Colo-I-Suva Forest Park, great for outdoor activities. Several excellent walking trails, three refreshing pools and ideal bird-watching grounds plus picnic and camping facilities are on offer at the park, a nice alternative to a day in the city. A local bus leaves every half hour for the park from the Suva station.

Suva really has it all, seaside location, bustling nightlife, modern conveniences and friendly locals. If visiting the Fiji Islands get yourself to Suva, it's the best four letter word next to 'Bula'!
