Sweden Travel Guide

flights to Sweden

The largest of the Scandinavian countries and arguably the most geographically diverse, Sweden boasts a staggering 100,000 lakes, the largest measuring a colossal 2140sq miles. Much of the country is sparsely inhabited at most with Lapland lying beyond the Arctic Circle and Norrland consisting of some of the densest forest in Europe. In stark contrast, the major urban areas are remarkably modern, if not architecturally cultural, with the general consensus that progression is good and individuals important. Like most Scandinavians the folk are friendly, hospitable and efficient and the cities are generally clean, safe and easy on the eye.

Sweden’s capital, Stockholm is a medieval town spread across 14 islands of an archipelago in the Baltic Sea. Widely regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals it successfully combines striking state-of-the-art architecture with twisting medieval streets and 13th century buildings. The country’s second city Gothenburg is also Sweden’s major Port and as one would expect it is a bustling, lively and very colourful place. The city centre is dominated by it's famous main street Avenyn which despite being lined with restaurants, entertainment emporiums, shops and bars has a vaguely park-like atmosphere. From Gothenburg, it is possible to embark upon a four or six day canal cruise on a turn of the century steamer and enjoy a picturesque tour of Sweden along the 350 miles of canals.

Sweden’s wilderness areas are both magical and challenging covered in lush forests, blue mountains and glistening lakes - a paradise for trekking. With around 200 castles Skane is one of the most popular and unusual regions. Many of the castles date back as far as the 13th and 14th centuries and several have been converted to luxury hotels. The area is also highly popular amongst golfers with 30 of Sweden’s best golf courses in the area. The true adventurer will want to head for the Lapps. Here you can watch the midnight sun, ski on some of the most exciting slopes in the world and stay in the world’s only ice hotel carved entirely out of ice and snow with 37 rooms and all mod cons. Sweden is a land of contrasts and adventure, both sophisticated and wild it offers the discerning visitor something far from the norm demonstrating how full life can actually be.
