Switzerland Travel Guide

flights to Switzerland

Switzerland is unquestionably one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The stunning mountain ranges, vast lakes, picturesque medieval architecture and the sheer variety of natural beauty is virtually unmatched. The eclectic fusion of German, French and Italian cultures has created a quintessential European culture in its own right making Switzerland one of the most instantly recognisable destinations in Europe. Despite the differences in language and hence a broad variance in many aspects of lifestyle, the country has striven for a united nation for over 700 years making it one of the friendliest and safest places to live or visit on the planet. It is no wonder they lay strong claim to inventing the modern tourist/hospitality industry.

Most visitors come for the Alps but if you insist on doing a bit of urban exploration, forget the capital Bern (appealing enough but a little lacklustre) and Geneva (charming yet sterile) and head for Zurich the intellectual and cultural capital of the country. Situated a little over 1300ft above sea level, Zurich is a fascinating city of 16th and 17th century architecture, winding cobbled alleys and no less than 1030 fountains. Today the birthplace of Dadaism is an artistic melting pot with a lively social scene, many fine restaurants and superb shopping. For a taste of city life amidst truly breathtaking scenery Montreux is hard to beat. Situated at the Eastern end of lake Geneva, this Mecca for musicians and artists plays host to one of the biggest International Jazz Fetivals in the world each summer.

The Swiss Alps need no introduction as they are quite possibly the most photographed natural phenomenon on the planet. Skiing is the major industry with the area around Canton Valais offering a 365 day season, it's principal resort Zermatt sits in the enviable shadow of the iconic Matterhorn. Lottery jackpot winners will, of course, head straight to St. Moritz in the 6,000ft high Engadine Valley. With top of the range facilities, accommodation, dining and nightlife and 322 sunny days a year it’s little wonder St Moritz is so popular with the jet-set. Skiing aside, there is much on offer for visitors who simply appreciate the good life and wonderful scenery. The Swiss are world leaders in hospitality, ever courteous and frighteningly efficient you would be hard pushed to find a more beautiful place to enjoy the lap of luxury anywhere in the world.
