Taunton Travel Guide

The town centre has recently been improved to provide a more relaxed atmosphere for shoppers and
visitors. There is a good mix of specialist shops
complemented by most of the major national multiples. Bath Place, The Old
Market Shopping Centre, Riverside Place and The Courtyard are all popular
shopping haunts. The
Taunton Antiques Market held every Monday in Silver Street attracts over
130 Antique Dealers specialising in everything collectable.
Taunton has a lively social life, The Brewhouse
Theatre and Arts Centre is the town’s premiere cultural venue for
theatrical and musical events. For less cerebral entertainment Taunton has some
80 pubs many
hosting a variety of musical and other events. Food and drink is taken
seriously too, there are numerous restaurants
in and around the town, many serving dishes from local produce. The restaurant
at The Castle Hotel is
internationally noted.
For the visitor Taunton is an ideal place from which to explore the surrounding countryside. To the north of the town are the Quantock Hills and
the seaside resort of Minehead, to the
west the wild landscape of Exmoor,
and to the south the hidden villages of the Blackdown Hills.
Adjacent to the M5 Taunton has good transport links with the rest of the country; London can be
reached by train in less than 3 hours. Bristol International Airport, with
regular flights to domestic and European destinations is less than one hours
drive away.
