Whitstable Travel Guide
Seven miles from Canterbury on the Thames estuary Whitstable is a popular resort and harbour town that retains its
maritime heritage hand in hand with modern life.
Squeeze Gut Alley is just one of the fascinating names of the numerous winding lanes and alley’s of
weatherboard cottages in the town centre. Harbour Street has an eclectic mix of
souvenir and gift shops and the High Street is home to the Whitstable Playhouse, whilst
close to the beach in the Horsebridge is the interesting Imperial Oyster Cinema housed
in a former oyster store.
Tankerton Slopes is a great vantage point from which to get a maritime perspective of the colourful beach huts and the long shingle
strand known as ‘The Street’ about half a mile out to sea at low tide.
The harbour is always busy with the comings and goings of small freighters, fishing
boats and local yachtsmen, especially at the end of July and early August when
the town hosts the Whitstable
Regatta and the annual Barge
