The area of Shirak, situated in the northwest of Armenia includes the country’s second largest city, Gyumri. The region provides beautiful scenic areas, including its alpine meadows, valleys of the Ashotsk district and the great Arpa Lake. Shirak is also the place where visitors can see the ruins of the magnificent city of Ani, Armenia’s former capital and cultural centre. The climate and countryside are rugged, with long, cold winters but when the warm summer does eventually arrive, so does the regions unparalleled beauty, with miles and miles of wildflower meadows, snow covered peaks and cool mountain streams.
