Queensland - Bundaberg

Queensland sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Take time to discover Bundaberg, the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Expect a place of plenty with 17 sandy beaches, 140 kilometres of coastline, coral cays and warm hospitality.

Bundaberg, 368 kilometres north of Brisbane, features historic buildings mixed with modern architecture. The Whaling Wall, a 7-storey landmark mural always catches the eye. For history buffs, learn about Bundaberg's favourite son, pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler or whet your appetite with a visit to wineries or the rum distillery.

Reef and Islands

Looking for reef experiences? Then head to the Southern Great Barrier Reef or visit the coral cays of Lady Musgrave, Lady Elliot Island, Fitzroy Reef and the Capricorn Group. Lady Elliot, formed over a 3000-year period, is located around 85 kilometres from Bundaberg. This is a true eco experience as the island is home to 200,000 nesting birds in summer, through the year hosts 57 bird species and is a base for nesting turtles. There are 10 fabulous dive sites and accommodation is available. Lady Musgrave has the largest navigable lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef at 1200 hectare. Camp in this superb coral cay, the water is home to manta rays, moray eels and other marine life. Areas such as Woongarra Marine Park has an array of hard and soft corals - see angel fish, butterfly fish and other exotic colourful creatures.

Turtle Watching

Mon Repos Conservation Park has the largest loggerhead turtle nesting area in the South Pacific. Each season from November to February, female loggerhead, flatback, green and leatherback giant sea turtles nest on the beach after dark. Then six to eight weeks later, hatchlings emerge from their nests and make their long journey to the ocean. Protect this delicate area by following Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service recommendations. The park is 15 kilometres from Bundaberg and turtles nest on the 1.5 kilometre sandy beach.

National Parks

For a rainforest, nature or national park experience, there's plenty of choice in the Bundaberg region. There's Auburn River National Park, with a rugged environment of boulders and pink granite; Cania Gorge north of Monto, featuring spectacular sandstone cliffs; Coalstoun Lakes' unique twin volcanic cinder cones with lush vine forests inside these craters and Deepwater National Park with palm forests and permanent deep water lagoons.

The Coral Coast
Elliot Heads will delight you with its white sandy estuary, patrolled surf beach and scenic cliffs. You won't find a better seaside holiday location than Kelly's Beach, with beachfront accommodation and an 18 hole golf course. A must visit spot is Bargara Beach, the major centre of the Coral Coast. It's newly developed foreshore streetscape, shopping precinct, accommodation and excellent dining facilities provide a total holiday package. For some beautiful scenery, a "must visit" is the Town of 1770 which lies on the estuary of Round Hill Creek. The highlight is a drive along the foreshore which leads to Round Hill Head and absolutely stunning views of Bustard Bay to the north and Agnes Waters to the South. Great Barrier Reef and Eco day trips are available here as well as accommodation and marine supplies.

Country

Picturesque Childers offers cultural insights with a pharmaceutical museum and heritage buildings.
