Bahamas - Hope Town, Elbow Cay, Abacos

Bahamas sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

A tiny Loyalist settlement on Elbow Cay, Abacos, HopeTown is amongst the most unspoilt and scenic places in the Bahamas. Famous for its vividly striped Lighthouse, the town oozes colonial charm offering a destination rich in history, culture and leisure. Motor vehicles are banned from the streets and the only powered transport you’re liable to come across is the occasional golf cart, otherwise it’s pushbike or feet. There are pleasant shopping areas, some good restaurants, a marina and several resort type complexes but Hope Town still retains it turn-of –the-century atmosphere.

You can actually rent accommodation around the lighthouse and climb to the top for wonderful views of the Cay and the neighbouring Islands. However the lighthouse wasn’t always held in such high esteem; when it was built in 1865 there were protests by locals who realised that they would lose a lucrative source of finance from wrecking and salvaging passing ships. Fortunately today’s inhabitants are a little less ruthless, offering the very best in Bahamian hospitality and always with a smile.
