For all those budding archaeologists out there, there is Qal'at Al-Bahrain, Bahrain’s top archaeological site. Excavations here began in the 1950s, which revealed the area, known as the Portuguese fort, to have been built on a hill, created from the rubble of past cities! In total, 7 different layers were found, showing that 7 different occupation periods were lying underneath the fort, dating as far back as 2800 BC. The excavation is on going and is best reached by car, with the area situated three miles west of Manama.
