This Buddhist monastery, located in Paharpur, was once the largest in the south of the Himalayas. The excavation area covers around 27 acres and is the most interesting archaeological site in Bangladesh. An 8th century structure, Somapuri Vihara is now in its festering stages, but the arrangement of the monastery is easy to work out, with its large quadrangle area being the monks’ cells and courtyard. There is also a museum close by which displays all materials found during archaeological digs.
