The country’s capital, connected to five regional centres by motorways and railroads, is a city proud to still be standing after nearly every building was destroyed in 1944 by the war. After a full restoration project, Minsk is now a modern, cultural and industrial city filled with beautiful parks, museums and monuments. The city’s main street praspekt Skaryny, contains a very large and busy promenade, with the famous Independence Square at the south west end, enclosed by a Polish catholic church and government buildings. There is also the Old Town of Minsk, where the Baroque Cathedral of St Dukhawski stands and which now houses a music academy.
