Belgium - Ghent

Belgium sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

It’s the capital of Oost-Vlaanderen and home to a large university. The main interest of Ghent though is inside its medieval, St Baaf's cathedral, where an imposing, emotional piece of art designed by 15th century artist Jan Van Eyck resides. Visitors to the cathedral will get to see the 20-panel altarpiece, with its figurative portrait of Christ's death, one of the earliest oil paintings to date.
