Belize - Caving in the Cayo District

Belize sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The Limestone tunnels of Che Chem Ha Cave in Vacca, Cayo are amongst the most historically fascinating in Belize. To get to the inner cavern you will have to swim, wade, walk and climb for around 40minutes, but it’s well worth the effort. The cavern contains myriad ancient relics including Mayan ceremonial artefacts – sacrificial blades carved of stone and bloodletting plates, as well as pots and carved jadeite stone. On a more eerie note, there are also several skeletons of unfortunate sacrifices themselves including those of women and young children. Come prepared with a pair of soft shoes as the floor is literally strewn with relics.
