Once the capital of Benin, until it was decided to move business twenty miles west to Cotonou, the town is the trade centre for a farming area, whose main exports are palm oil, kapok and cotton. Porto Novo is also a very picturesque and historical place, with the Éthnographique Museum being a place in the town where visitors can see an interesting collections of artefacts. There is also an old church for visitors to look round, Brazilian in style and today the building is used as a mosque.
