Bolivia - A Staggering Walk on the Mapiri Trail

Bolivia sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

‘Staggering’ is maybe the operative word for this gruesome but once in a lifetime trek along the Mapiri Trail. Following a 1000yr old pre-Inca trail, the route can take between 3-8 days depending on personal fitness and general conditions. Beginning at the village of Ingenio, the trail drops 3000m into the jungle through dense cloud forest for which a Rambo-style machete may be required. Trekking across rivers, streams, past ancient caves and ruins, the trail twists and corkscrews through the Bolivian jungle heaving with all of the country’s most fascinating wildlife. This is not for the gentle weekend stroller – the Mapiri Trail will chew you up and spit you out if you don’t make the grade. But if you do it’s an experience you’ll never forget in a million years.
