Travelling by rail from La Paz to Chile will offer scenery like you wouldn’t believe and will certainly beat anything you’re likely to see commuting to work. La Paz is already set in an extraordinary location, nestled in a basin below the high plateau and surrounded by the 6000m snow clad peaks. Moving southwards alongside the Cordillera Quimsa Cruz, these steep and rugged mountains rise to over 21,300 ft with permanent snow and glaciers adorning the peaks and boasting to be the most spectacular ranges in Bolivia. Chugging further southwards, the rail track is flanked by more amazing scenery including the stunning mountains of the Cordillera de los Frailes to the left and to the right, the salt flats, volcanoes, rivers and lakes of the Bolivian Altiplano. No paperbacks or crosswords are required on this rail journey – the scenery will be captivating enough.
