Founded in 1525 by Juan de Saavedra and named after his Spanish hometown, Valparaiso makes a fascinating day trip for visitors to Santiago. Built on steep hills with winding, criss-crossing streets sprawling all over it is not unlike a mound of spaghetti in appearance. Indisputably colourful in every sense the houses are painted in various hues, many decorated with remnants of their residents maritime past. Amongst the highlights are the twenty murals on the hill called Cerro Bellavista, which range from cubism to surrealism. Sunday is a good time to visit as the street come alive with markets and antiques fairs adding another level of intrigue to this fascinating area.
