One of only 6 or seven countries in the Southern Hemisphere that lies between the requisite latitude of between 30o and 40o, Chile has been producing quality wine for around 150 years, (although its winemaking history dates back to the mid 16th century) including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The fertile central Valley, watered by the melting snows of the Andes and the frost-free microclimates, combine to produce ideal, almost consistent conditions in which the grapes can be grown. Situated in the area around Santiago are many of the best-known vineyards, most of which host tours and tastings with several of them also offering accommodation in hacienda style lodges. However you don’t have to visit a vineyard as there are plenty of opportunities to try a drop or two of the fine wines produced here at cafes and restaurants.
