Bogota - Opulent Dreams at the Emerald Market

Colombia is the world’s largest producer of emeralds and is also renowned for the exceptionally high quality of the stones it trades. What is more the prices are roughly half of those paid in either the US or Europe, but it is advisable to have a reasonable knowledge in the field before making a purchase. The emerald market at the southwestern corner of Avenida Jiménez and Carrera 7 is a real eye opener; dozens of vendors compete for custom as big money deals are made on the streets. The atmosphere is exciting if a little bit unnerving and if you are not an expert it is well advised to look but not enter into negotiations – high minded, flash cash tourists are notoriously easy targets for fraudsters and con-men.
