The oldest district in Bogotá, La Candelaria is also the most laid back. It is split into two zones, the business area and, more interestingly the residential zone. Here colonial houses sport wooden balconies and clay tile roofs, the once traditional white walls have been painted bright colours lending warmth to the atmosphere. The area is home to several important monuments and buildings including the Palace of San Carlos, the Luis Angel Arango Library, Colon Theatre and the churches of La Candelaria and San Ignacio. It is also a favourite place to buy a cup of delicious Colombia hot chocolate.
