Colombia - The Cathedral of Salt – Zipaquira
Colombia sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide
Possibly the most unusual place of worship you could wish to visit, the Salt Cathedral at Zipaquira took five years to build (1991-96) and is housed within an existing salt mine. The site of the Cathedral dates back to the Muisca Indians who regarded the mountain as an important source of salt. The Cathedral is located 390ft below ground level and covers and area of 26,250sq feet. Built for a competition by Roswell Garavito Pearl, it took 250,000 tons of salt just to build the columns and lofts.
