Colombia - The Sacred Lake of El Dorado
Colombia sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Only 31 miles from Bogotá is the village of Gautavita, home to the legend of El Dorado. The village takes its name from Laguna de Guatavita by which it stands and the lake in turn takes the name from the goddess who is believed to inhabit the waters. Legend holds that a Muisca chief’s wife drowned herself there and became an immortal. Sacrifices of gold and precious stones were cast into the waters each year until the grief stricken chief eventually floated onto the lake, adorned in gold and sacrificed himself to be back with his loved one. Even today the area is a magical place filled with natural beauty and a peaceful soothing atmosphere.
