Situated on a hill, Santiago El Cobre is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Cuba. Many a visitor has climbed up its hill to visit the sanctuary, to either keep a promise they made to return or to bring offerings for the Virgin of Charity. The Virgin, according to legend, once appeared above the waters of the Bay of Nipe and due to this extraordinary event, the Catholic Church decided to build the sanctuary in 1927.
