Cyprus - Famagusta

Cyprus sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Famagusta is a ghost town, which lies in a UN zone between the Republic of Cyprus and the occupied areas. The Turks invaded the town in July 1974, causing its occupants to flee the area to escape the fighting, and napalm gases. Today, the area is called no-mans-land, as it belongs to neither Turkey nor Cyprus and is situated between crude borderlines. Nothing has been touched since the people fled the area; clothes still hang on washing lines and new hotel buildings are only half finished, with cranes close by, left to corrode away. Visitors can see the area from a designated region, where binoculars are free to use, to view Famagusta up close.
