Second only in size to Prague Brno is the economic and cultural centre of the delightful region of the Czech Republic known as South Moravia. Situated at the crossroads of ancient trade routes between North and South Europe it has long been established as a centre of trade and industry, which has funded the magnificent architecture that plays such an important role in the City’s tourist trade. Ranging from the avant-garde to early 20th century the crowning glories are the imposing dome of St.Peter and St.Paul’s Church and the rambling Spilberk Castle with its fantastic baroque fortifications.
Beyond the reaches of the City South Moravia - the ‘Land of Sun and Wine’ – is also rich in history, culture and architectural treasures. Famous for its fine wines and pleasant climates the people embrace traditions and have a reputation for excellent hospitality. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and has been an inspiration for countless poets, writers artists and musicians, amongst them Gustav Mahler and Milan Kundera. Covered in spectacular undulating scenery, dense forests and bizarre karst landscapes tourists flock to the area to bask in the sunshine, explore caves, sail or swim in Lake Brno or simply to enjoy the traditional lifestyle and generally heart-warming atmosphere of the many towns and villages.
