Tucked safely in a hairpin curve of the Vltava River the ancient town of Cesky Krumlov is one of the best-preserved historical towns in Bohemia. It’s magic is indisputable – red-tiled roofs, Renaissance facades, Gothic portals, traffic free cobbled streets all crowned by a magnificent castle – there is little if any sign of modern development within the entire area. Virtually ignored during communist rule the virtual death of Cesky Krumlov became a latter day blessing when the regime collapsed leaving the town exactly as it was in the mid 13th century. Restoration began, instigated by resourceful townsfolk.
Firstly they set about cleaning the years of dust and grime from the buildings. The potential appeal of the town to tourists was soon apparent and before long houses had become inns, back rooms were galleries and cellars housed friendly traditional bistros. Today it has become a major tourist magnet thriving on visitors who have tired of Prague’s pomp and circumstance and want a taste of Bohemia’s colourful history without the industry razzmatazz and with twice the allure. Despite the growing throngs Cesky has retained its ancient charm and thanks to UNESCO is now classed as a world monument guaranteeing it a long and thankfully picturesque future.
