One of the biggest tourist attractions that the Czech Republic has to offer is neither a building nor a landmark; it is beer. Believed by many to be brewers of some of the finest beers in the world, this is where Budweiser was born, although it has to be said that the Czech equivalent is far superior to its relentlessly promoted US cousin (just ask the experts with whom I have to agree).
Brewed in the town of Ceske Budejovice (a centre of Czech beer manufacture for 700 years known as Budweis in Germany) the brewery became producers of the imperial beer in the mid 1500s rightly establishing its reputation as one of Europe’s highest quality beers. Four and a half centuries on and little has changed with the Budweiser Budvar brewery still using the same clear water from the town’s 300m deep artesian well. A tour of the brewery lasts around 1 hour and is a fascinating insight into the history and science behind the Czech Republic’s favourite national pastime.
