Copenhagen - Hippie haven at Christiania

Strolling or cycling through the car free community of Christiania, is a true awe-inspiring experience with its vibrant and arty, yet laidback atmosphere. Known as a ‘progressive’ community, the area started life as a military camp before being deserted in the 1970’s and taken over by squatters who declared it their own ‘free state’. Today the predictable drug problems that followed the ambitious proclamation have been cleaned up and Christiania is still a rent and tax-free enclave. There are local craft markets and plenty of cafe bars selling organic food at very reasonable prices. Guided tours of the area take place daily during the summer months or you may prefer to wander around yourself, mingling and swinging your pants with the rest of the hippies.
