Denmark - Ferry Ride to Hamlet’s Elsinore

Denmark sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Immortalised by Shakespeare as being the setting for Hamlet’s Elsinore Castle (in reality the commanding Kronborg Slot) Helsingør, as it is known these days sits on the Danish Riviera about 20 miles north of Copenhagen. Its position on the coast also happens to be at the narrowest point of the sea, called Øresund (or the Sound) between Sweden and Denmark. Ferries between the two countries sail relentlessly back and forth from Helsingborg on the Swedish side to Helsingør on the Danish 24hrs a day, making it the busiest shipping channel in the world. Swedish shoppers usually take the ferry over to Helsingør to take advantage of it’s fabulous retail opportunities, not least of all the plethora of liquor stores around the harbour. But towering over everything and the other main magnet for visitors is the Kronborg Slot, or rather Elsinore Castle for those wanting to get a real feel for one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. To go, or not to go – that is the question.
