Denmark - The Fairy-tale Island of Funen

Denmark sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Funen is the magical place where Denmark’s most famous son, Hans Christian Andersen was born and drew his influences. And, this beautiful island could certainly have leapt straight out of one of his storybooks. Known as the Garden of Denmark for it’s breathtaking rural scenery, the lush green hills are peppered with thatched farmhouses and quaint windmills whilst the white, sandy coastlines have a scattering of tranquil seaside towns. The best way to experience the island is by cycling across the landscape and feeling the brisk Danish wind in your sails. There are around 1175km of marked cycle paths, so there is plenty to go at. Alternatively, check out Odense - Hans’ hometown and the largest you’ll find on the island boasting Hans’ former house, a Gothic Cathedral and a number of superb museums. Funen is laid back, quaint and retains an irresistible charm that has remained unchanged for centuries.
