When the name says ‘Free’, it really does mean…free. Christiania is a unique city begun in 1970 as a social experiment and where now, around 1000 squatters live, running restaurants and craft shops and even publishing their own newspaper. The aim was to create an alternative life based on communal living and freedom. Located on the eastern side of Christianshavn in an abandoned 41-hectare military camp, perceptions of this city amongst the Danes are still mixed after thirty years. Indeed, car-free, rent-free and tax-free Christiania has retained much of it’s controversial nature. Most visitors however find there is a curiously magical mix of anarchy and love and are impressed with what they see. Guided walking tours can be taken around the city explaining how life is lived in Christiania and how the shops, workshops and colourful markets are run. Fascinating and unique, this is a perfect opportunity to see a totally different lifestyle that takes a welcome breather from the ever-tiring rat race.
