Djibouti - The Lakes

Djibouti sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Getting away from the dryness of the plains, visitors should go and see some of the country’s most beautiful lakes. Two of which are Lac Goubet and Lac Assal, both separated by a dormant volcano. The first lake visitors will arrive at is Lake Goubet, a seawater loch known by the locals as 'the pit of demons'! Carrying on to the other side of the volcano, travellers will reach Lake Assal, which is 492 feet under the sea and is enveloped by black lava fields and other dormant volcanoes. A lake not to miss out on though, is Lake Abbé, located on the border with Ethiopia. Travellers must be at this lake at dawn, the most spectacular time to see the lake, when its waters are filled with a colourful array of pink flamingos.
