Dominican Republic - The Crocodiles of Isla Cabritos National Park

Dominican Republic sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Isla Cabritos was declared a national park in 1974 and is home to over 106 species of flora and fauna. The large saltwater lake of Lago Enriquillo is 144ft below sea level and is home to some 500 American crocodiles, the largest population outside the USA. This important breeding area can be explored (carefully) by vehicle, by foot or by boat affording the intrepid visitor close up and personal encounters with the last of the dinosaurs. For the best results it is advisable to visit the Island early… not only are the crocodiles more active but it is also much cooler. You should also come prepared with plenty of cold drinks, as there is nowhere to buy one when you arrive.
