Dominican Republic - The Zona Colonial in Santa Domingo

Dominican Republic sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Founded by Christopher Columbus in the 16th century the Zona Colonial is the oldest part of the city that became Santa Domingo. Covering and area of around 15 blocks it is home to some of the best examples of 15th and 16th century architecture in the world including a university, hospital, monastery, convent and the New World’s first ever cathedral. It is surprising how a place so old can remain so vibrant and trendy.

Amongst the colonial houses, used as abodes, embassies, cultural centres and museums are myriad bars and restaurants frequented by the young and chic, artists, craftsmen and blue-collar workers. A virtual living breathing museum where past meets present almost seamlessly the focus of social activity is around the old Central Plaza which is flanked by colonial style shops, galleries and restaurants. Where else in the world can eat a fast food lunch in the front room of a clapboard house then five minutes later step into a 16th century castle that once played host to the worlds greatest explorer?
