Dominican Republic - Whale watching

Dominican Republic sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

In these eco friendly times more and more people are becoming fascinated with wildlife and hanker after the first hand experience. Probably the most spectacular and certainly the most awesome close encounter with wild creatures in their natural surroundings has to be whale watching. Off the Dominican coast, a place known as Silver Banks has become the country’s focus for this exhilarating pastime. The area is the world’s largest breeding ground for the humpback whale, 100sq miles of shallow waters and coral reef and derives its name from the vast quantities of Spanish treasure lost during wrecks in the 17th century. Here you can observe at close hand groups of whales performing courting rituals including the unnerving spectacle of bulls competing for mates. You can here their legendary ‘songs’ as the water around vibrates in time with the tunes. See mother and calf together and (if you have the nerve) even snorkel close to the boat amongst these magnificent gentle creatures.
