The ‘train’ that you’ll be riding is actually a school bus, modified to run along a railway, but what it lacks in authenticity, the Ibarra-San Lorenzo Railway more than makes up for in spectacle. The line runs 120miles from the highlands near Quito at 7,250ft down to the coast close by the Colombian border and passes through some absolutely amazing scenery, including some impressive white water rivers, during the steeper section of the journey. It is certainly a pleasant way to get a lesson in Ecuador’s vastly diverse landscape, especially for passengers brave enough to ride on the rooftop.
