Built in the 16th century the San Francisco Monastery in Quito is the oldest church in Ecuador. The design is a blend of Spanish and Italian architectural styles and the structure took some 70 years to complete. The magnificent baroque interior is a wonder to behold – beautifully carved statuary, wonderful examples of early religious art, Moorish influenced roof carvings and baroque altar, lavishly covered in gold leaf. Adjacent to the monastery is the convent, which now houses the Museum of San Francisco and contains a very impressive collection of the splendid artwork, period clothing and elaborately carved furniture taken from the monastery itself. Highlight of a museum tour is a visit to the organ loft, from which you get an excellent view over the entire church interior.
