Built in 1382 and named after the great Caravansary, Emir Djaharks el-Khalili, Cairo’s most famous souk (market) was known as the Turkish Bazaar during the Ottoman period and has been an influence on countless espionage books, movies and TV shows. Today it is generally referred to simply as the Khan and is still an important centre of Egyptian trade, although the spice monopolists have long since disappeared. Besides a being a major place of trade and commerce the Khan also doubles as a meeting place, with many of the cafes frequented by artists and writers, which adds a distinctly romantic atmosphere to the already fascinating area.
