Egypt - Temple of Karnak

Egypt sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Covering approximately 1.5km, Karnak is a city of temples built over 2000 years ago, brimming with sanctuaries, obelisks, kiosks and pylons. The magnificent temple at the heart of this complex - the Temple of Karnak was known to the ancient Egyptians as Ipet-isut was dedicated to the Theben triad of Amon, Mut and Khonsu. This colossal temple is so big that St Peter's, Milan and Notre Dame Cathedrals could be lost within its walls. Measuring in at a massive 54,000 square feet and boasting 134 huge 23m high columns, the Hypostyle hall is the largest room of any religious building in the world. Walk down the imposing Avenue of the Rams and see the obelisk of Tutmose I, similar to ‘Cleopatra’s Needle' in London. Writers have found it near impossible to describe the immenseness of the Temple of Karnak, it is one of those places that has to be seen to be believed.
