Tallin - Raekoja Plats

Tallin sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Tallinn’s traditional centre is Raekoja Plats or Town Hall Square, which has played a major role in the city’s lifestyle since the 11th century. The town hall itself is the oldest surviving Gothic building of its kind in Europe and was completed in 1404. It copper weathervane was added later and features a representation of the legendary warrior Vana Toomas (Old Thomas) who is the symbol of Tallinn. The other most significant building is the apothecary, which has existed on the square since 1422 and has been run by ten generations of the same family. Raekoja Plts is a popular meeting place, especially during the summer when the midnight sun means people are out and about enjoying themselves well into the early hours.
