Established in 1993, Soomaa National Park covers around 230sq miles, the majority of which is covered by four huge bogs surrounded by beautiful wooded meadows and swampy virgin forests. The area is rich in folklore and is traditionally believed to be a haven for witches and other supernatural phenomena. The only means of transport through the bogs is by haabja, a traditional Finnish canoe carved from a single aspen tree. Paddling through the eerie, forested areas it is easy to imagine why the locals thought they were a sanctuary for the darker side of human nature and all things ethereal. In truth you are more likely to come across some of the myriad species of wildlife for which the Soomaa is home – brown bears, wolves, flying squirrels and eagles – and even they tend to give human visitors a wide birth. Nonetheless it is a fascinating area and makes a great day out.
