This is an island of paradise for anyone who loves bird watching. Some of the world's most concentrated bird colonies come to the Faeroe Islands, with many cliffs on the northern and western coasts of the islands, swarming with huge flocks of birds. The reason the island is so popular with birds, is due to the combination of the cold arctic currents and warm Gulf Stream waters from the Faeroes, resulting in an area abound with rich food for nesting birds. There are around 300 species of birds on the islands, of which, 40 species are rare visitors and 40 are common breeding birds including the puffin, guillemot, fulmar, kittiwake, razor bill, black guillemot, petrel and Tjaldur or ‘Oyster Catcher’, with the latter being the national bird of the Faeroe Islands.
