Situated on an island in the Spree River, Museum island is a history and art buffs dream come true. There are five museums in all built between 1824 and 1930 the Pergamon, Museum of Antiquities, National Gallery, Altes and Bodemuseum. The Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) is also located on the island. Cream of the crop is the Pergamon, which is considered one of the most significant museums of ancient history in the world and houses the Pergamon Altar of Zeus from 180BC and portions of the spectacular Ishtar Gate.
