Munich - Marienplatz

Munich sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

At the very heart of the city is Central Marienplatz, Munich’s famous square. It buzzes with tuneful musicians and street artists in under the watchful eye of Munich’s patron, who stands proudly in the form of a golden statue atop a massive column in the centre of the square (the Mariensäule). Also bordering Marienplatz is some of the city’s most notable architecture. On one side, there is the Gothic Neues Rathaus (New City Hall). Excellent views of the city are to be had from it’s tower and don’t miss the amazing performance of mechanical figures that strikes up to mark the time. There is also the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall), and on the south side there is St Peter’s, the oldest church in Munich. Culture, music and a great ambience all packed into one and only a short stroll away from the massive outdoor Viktualienmarkt.
