Germany - The Harz Region

Germany sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The Harz Region is a fantastic getaway for any sports fanatic looking for spectacular scenery and some quality conditions for anything from skiing and snowboarding, to hiking and cycling. Boasting a dramatic range mountains which erupt from the North German Plain and stretch for 100km, the Harz Mountains comprise plunging valleys punctuated by natural reservoirs and rivers. The whole region is peppered with picturesque little villages such as Wernigerode, Quedlinburg and Stolberg, full of almost fairytale-looking carved timber-fronted houses from various centuries. And, if all that is not enough, there is also the Rübeländ dripstone caves, the castle at Wernigerod and the historic narrow-gauge railway line to the highest Harz mountain – the Brocken (1142m). Can you afford not to go?
