The cave, generally known as the Cathedral Cave, consists of an upper hall with five connecting passages, leading to a smaller hall and carries on to a series of narrower halls and a further sequence of chambers, reaching depths of 250 feet. This rabbit warren of a cave was prepared as an emergency hospital during World War two but was never put to use, then later on, while making an alternative entrance to the cave, further chambers were discovered and named Lower St. Michael's Cave. The Cathedral Cave is now available to visitors as a unique hall for ballets, concerts and dramas and its interesting interior includes remains of old stalagmite, that got too heavy and toppled over, an amazing sight that can be seen at the far end of St. Michael’s Cave.
